Unity Through Diversity

by Isaiah Roman

There is a trilogy of writings entitled “The Ultimate Philosophy” that attempts to explain the map to human Utopia. How can the finite mind (having limits or bounds) achieve the state of infinity (limitless or endless bounds)? This is yet another attempt by humanity to lift itself up by its own boot straps. The picture that readily comes to mind is a person clinging to a precipitous ledge with one hand, while reaching down with the other hand to grasp his boot straps so that he can pull his feet up and over the ledge in order to stand on a level utopian plain.

“Since Utopia is the best Humanity can perceive, Utopia should be Humanity’s guiding philosophy. This ultimate philosophy of striving for the best life possible for everyone, can be one global element of common sense and common purpose in an otherwise complex and fragmented world. Utopian philosophy can be the goal that unites the world for good and noble actions.”

There is a great deal of ignorance expressed in this statement by those that propose this utopia. The major factor that is being ignored is “human nature.” Those that espouse this plan admit the diversity of people that inhabit the earth. We are of various sizes, shapes, colors and cultural background. These differences divide us from each other. In order to unite us in a utopic state they want to focus on the elements of humanity that unite us.

What they are really attempting to do is reinvent the wheel. In reality what they seek is unity through diversity. The closest anyone has ever come to this dream is the founders of the constitution of the United States of America.

It is impossible for order to come out of Chaos since it is man and human nature that created the chaos in the first place. It is as if one enters a stage production in the second or third act and from the remaining acts making a “calibrated guess” as to what preceded before.

Many men have discussed the phenomenon of lifting oneself up by his own bootstraps; but, no one has ever been recorded as having completed the feat. A more realistic example of this attempt to make a man-made heaven on earth is given in an early American novel “Rip Van Winkle” written by Washington Irving. This was required reading in grammar school at one time. It might be well to return to read it for those who have forgotten it.

Utopia is not a novel idea; Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, all the ancient philosophers were unable through philosophy to achieve it. The conclusion each reached was out side help was required but the fell short of determining what that force was. They spoke of a god. Some longed to reach such a being; but, they were unable to reach any conclusion at to how it might be done.

None of the ancient societies reached that point until the Hebrews (Jews) arrived on the historic landscape.  They discovered that unless God reveal Himself mankind in his “post adamic state” could not know Him.  This harks back to the creation mode of mankind’s appearance.  It is a strong piece of evidence to the creation story that exists in every aboriginal religious experience.  It is part of the Judeo/Christian faith.  It is evidence of corruption of divine creational order becoming man-made chaos instead of order possibly becoming derived from chaos.

One man, Abraham, was approached by “the unknown God” and given a trial of obedience.  The results were fantastic.  His son and his son’s son began a nation that is the only one that has existed continually until today.  The modern nation of Israel can be traced throughout history from Abraham coming out of “Ur of the Chaldees” and has reentered the politics of the world in 1947-48.   All other ancient nations rose and fell of decay from within.  Archeologists have unearthed the remains of many of them.  they reached a zenith and collapsed into ruin.  How could this have happened?  Many have marveled at the art and culture that was reached before their fall.  Why did such glory fade into chaos?  They were overcome by a moral disease rising out of “human nature.”

Every ancient nation had one driving passion; that lust, if you will, was the desire to extend their borders from end to end of the world as they knew it.  “Everybody wants to rule the world.”  Political intrigue, desire for pleasure, desire for power which equates in the human mind as precious metals or money, class envy and and pure avarice ripped them apart at the apex of each culture.

This phenomenon of human nature can readily be seen in the smallest human.  A baby cries until an adult comes to determine why it is crying and corrects the source of discomfort.  That is both a blessing and a curse.  The baby cries to get attention.   It is the only way it has to let someone know there is a need.  If the parent is not wise the baby turns a necessity into a curse.  It may be referred to as the “me first” syndrome.  It is sometimes cute and lovable in a baby; but, in a grown human being it can be ugly and disastrous.

Correction institutions are filled to overflowing evidence of human nature.  It is almost universal no one in prison is guilty; he or she is there because someone else put them there; it was not their fault.   Human nature can be a blessing to a mature person as well.  It was the desire to be a leader that brought many to prominence in history.  It was that desire that turned to avarice and greed as well and a need to be noticed that turned into notoriety for Attila the Hun, Ghengis Kahn, Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

Mankind will strive and struggle between themselves until one supreme ruler rises out of the mass of humanity. If left to his own devices mankind will not cease that struggle.

Mankind will only rule the world at the cost of a great deal of bloodshed, monstrous loss of life and untold suffering by mankind. Man is able only to rule the world by force of arms (“through the barrel of a gun”).  It can not be done in a humane way.  He will take the life of everyone that opposes him until he has conquered all.  Until human nature is swallowed up or immersed in a superior nature that overcomes it he will not cease striving to rule the world.  There is  no middle ground.

Unity through diversity will be achieved; but, not by collectivism which is a man made heaven that he has named UTOPIA.   The Son of God, Christ on the cross will conquer!

“Thus said the Lord God; In the day when I chose Israel, and lifted up mine hand unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up mine hand unto them, saying, I am the Lord your God (Ezekiel 20:5)”

“And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers (Ezekiel 20:42).”

“The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him you shall hearken (Deuteronomy 18:15).”

This is a witness to all those that would rule the world and those that will blindly follow such a person:

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel [God with us] (Isaiah 7:14).”

“I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee (Psalms 2:7).”

”For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).”

“Then said Jesus unto them, When you have lifted up the Son of man [on the cross], then shall you know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things (John 8:28).

“Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am he (John 13:19).”
