Salvation 1a

Salvation is much more than a notion, a good idea or a nice thing to do; it is lifelong commitment to a way of purity. Why? The God who saves you is pure. The moral law does not consider a Christian’s weaknesses 1 as a human being; in fact, it does not take into account either heredity or infirmities. It simply demands an absolutely morality; “blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.”  Morality is purity; nothing less.

First, and foremost, salvation is not achieved by the things you do, but once you have received the promise of salvation, you will find that the things you do begin to become oriented more and more towards those things which are “pure.”

For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.(Ephesians 2:8,9)

Because by works of law not one of all flesh will be justified before Him, for through law is full knowledge of sin. Psa. 143:2 (Romans 3:20)

One cannot reach the point where they feel as though they need salvation until they realize that a) there is a God and b) that this God is righteous in his demand for obedience to the Law. It is when one realizes these two things that they reach the point of decision, but after the decision is made there is still the knowledge of the Law. The Law both teaches us about sin, but also teaches that one must work to first avoid, next reject, and finally abhor sin.

Salvation Part 1

“… one came and said unto him [Jesus], Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?  And he said unto him, Why do you call me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.  He said unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,  Honor thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.  The young man said unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?  [(Mark 10:21 adds) Then Jesus beholding him loved him] Jesus said unto him, If you wilt be perfect, go and sell that you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.  But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.“  (Matthew 19: 16-22)

In the modern church a great deal of attention is paid to the “experience” of church going. This has translated to every aspect of the “Christian Experience” in life. One key modern teaching is the “salvation experience.” Usually this keys around one’s saying of the “sinner’s prayer” or “walking the isle.” These concepts are really misleading and have caused many to believe that they are “saved” by merely quoting some mystical incantation that magically grants them eternal life. Others teach that through a series of obediences, practices and even proper mental attitudes one can find “transcendent peace.” There is no such thing as a salvation experience, no amount of prayer will grant you salvation, and no deed or duty you can possibly perform can pay for your way into heaven. Then what is salvation, and how does one receive this gift?

Over the next few posts we will explore exactly what the scriptures say about what salvation is, and what it isn’t. The test lies in the following; are we adding to, or subtracting from the scriptures in order to support these conclusions, or are we following the panoply of scripture and arriving at a correct conclusion. Test what is written against the Word, and the Word will show you the Truth.

Judgement is coming…

Judgment is coming and will soon be at hand. Many pulpits have forgotten that God is not simply love and peace. God is also wrath and judgement. Justice is when the sinner is punished for their sins. It is the Justification of righteousness, versus unrighteousness. Eastern philosophy attempts to teach us that there is no ultimate “Right” nor an ultimate “Wrong” when at the same time it prescribes living a “good” life. What is the standard of good? By what do we judge a good life, versus a bad life? Who’s to say that Hitler wasn’t acting on the best behalf of the human race?

The whole world screams and groans for righteousness, and that righteousness is coming. There will come a “time” when each person in his/her turn will be alone before the presence of the Creator, Provider, Redeemer and Preserver who is Sovereign over all of the universe; and they will be judged. Don’t worry about having to stand in line and wait; time will have ended before this comes to pass. Time is only important for temporal life, here in this world; after the end, time will be no more!  The finite mind has great difficulty grasping that concept; some find it impossible.

They did not live in that body of flesh eternally.  “The wages of sin is death.”  (Romans 6: 23a)  But by the same token everyone of those ,who as Abraham,  believed God1 are alive now in the presence of Jesus the Christ.2  “But, the gift of God is eternal life! (6: 23b)

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life:3 and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” (Revelation of John 20: 12)
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.  And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  (Revelation of John 21:1-2)  And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.  (Revelation of John 21:22)

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.  For those who ignore, deny or reject Abraham’s example4 and deny the living God they will pass through hell into the lake of fire for all eternity…“Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.”  (Mark 9:44)

For the righteous shall be given a garment; a garment just as the one Jesus was clothed with as he stood with His apostles on the mount of transfiguration.5 That garment is the righteousness of God.  Without it no man can appear in the presence of God and live.6  “The dead in Christ shall rise [first]…Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”  (I Thessalonians 4:17)

”For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waits for him.  (Isaiah 64:4; See also I Corinthians 2: 9)

In the present world white is white, black is black, brown is brown and etc. The king sits in a palace with servants at his beck and call and dines sumptuously. The poor man sits in his house, hut or hovel and eats what he is able to acquire. The president of these United States and those who sit in the hallowed halls of congress live the life of comfort, pleasure and ease as do the rich and the mighty and they do well for now.
In the final analysis everyone dies a physical death and his spirit shall leave this earth. The flesh shall return to the dust7 from whence it came. Death is the great leveler! And what shall the spirit do? For those, who as Abraham, believe God they shall enter the presence of God and abide there eternally.

The person who calls himself a Christian and is not overjoyed with that prospect in the “here and now” will not be at home there in the presence of God eternally. The person who finds it a great bother, unnecessary or whatever to find time to worship, thank and praise the living God for his existence now, need not concern himself about what he will do in the presence of God eternally! He simply won’t be there! Think about it!

  1. Matthew 17:5; “This is my beloved son, hear  him.”
  2. II Corinthians 5:6-8; “…absent from the body, [is] to be present with the Lord”
  3. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defiles, neither whatsoever works abomination, or makes a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (Revelation of John 21:27)
  4. Romans 4:3; Abraham believed God and it was accounted unto him for righteousness
  5. Matthew 17: 2; Mark 9:2

Happily Ever After…

The last sentence of every “fairy tale” written ends with these words, “and they lived happily ever after.” Everyone above the age of twelve knows that is not true! Life is filled with surprises and disappointments. While they may not be life threatening many of the illnesses mankind suffers are not pleasant. Jesus did not teach nor tell any fairy tales; He told the truth. “Life is real, life is ernest and the grave is not the goal. Dust thou art to dust returneth was not spoken of the soul.” “A Psalm of Life” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

The scriptures do not teach, “don’t worry, be happy.” To all those who put their trust in God through his covenant (New Testament) “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) That is Jesus’ promise that brings “the peace of God which passes all understanding” (Philippians 4: 7) and joy. “Joy to the world, the Lord is come.” (“Christmas Carol” by Isaac Watts)

Joy is lasting; happiness is transient. Happiness is fleeting; it passes away when trials and tribulations are brought into the life of the Christian to prepare him for eternal life in the presence of God. The word happiness comes from the ancient English and means a passing random moment of human satisfaction.

Joy is a gift of God which is a sometimes fleeting moment of glorious insight into God’s eternity. The promise of eternity in God’s presence is lasting while the Christian lives the obedient life in Christ.  When the soul encounters a downcast moment it is the Holy Spirit dealing with it; consider why, confess the cause which is the disobedience and repent, turn back to God in the example of Jesus His Son!

“For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall you be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength…[God gives a warning toward a hard heart; that is the only thing that keeps the believer apart from His “life”1 which is God] and you would not.” (Isaiah 30:15) “The wages of sin is death” when a Christian loses his joy through sin he receives his wages he has just earned. But, the gift of God is eternal life” returning to obedience, confession of sin and repentance restores the Christian to eternal life. Don’t be robbed of joy; claim it at once and keep looking up. The desire to live with joy in your heart becomes more and more an imperative. The sooner there is a return to obedience the sooner the joy is restored. For this reason the admonition to be “instantly [and] constantly in prayer”2 is encouraged by exhortation from the Apostle.

“The Lord shall preserve you from all evil, he shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth and even for ever more.” (Psalm 121: 7-8)

“I will bring evil upon all flesh,3 saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest. The man of God may temporarily suffer discomfort, bad accommodations and short rations but his life is given him in safety and security; he may suffer wounds or illnesses; but, his soul is never in jeopardy.”

  2. Romans 12: 12; Ephesians 6: 18
  3. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; Romans 3: 23

Wrestling with God over sin?

God created humans in His own image, and because we are created in His image, we have an innate desire for subject-object relationships. We have a massive desire for interaction with God;1 but, sin (self-indulgence) demands that we exalt our own individuality. This errant, illogical, humanistic thought corrupts and even at times inhibits reception of God’s revelation to mankind. When we are buried in our thoughts of self, we tend to think myopically when searching for the fulfillment of “spiritual” matters. Psychologically we know the answer to most spiritual problems is not self, but others. What is lost is the truth that there is only “One” other that can fulfill the spirit’s desires.

God delivers man from sin; through obedience to Christ2 mankind is delivered from individuality. This means offering our natural life to God as a living sacrifice to Him,3 giving over “self” to the interests of another, so that He may transform the spirit, and from the spirit, bring about a life that conforms to the life of Christ.4 This begins a life of spiritual warfare where the Holy Spirit placed in residence in the heart of man by Christ wars against the body of flesh. To those who are in the flesh, what I just wrote will prompt a red flag. It will sound like I’m proposing that one subject themselves to brain washing; and, in a sense, they would be right. The real question is, is what Christ offers the best for you as a person; does He have your best interests at heart, is God a loving, caring father who wants the best for you, or is this just another sophistic practice, bent on your subjugation for some nefarious design.

There is a “picture” or “type” of this warfare that appears in the life of Jacob, twin brother to Essau, sons of Isaac, whose father was Abraham:5

“And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.  And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.  And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.  And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.  And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.  And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.” (Genesis 32: 24-29)

This event took place as Jacob was in flight from the wrath of Laban.  He was returning toward the wrath of Essau his brother. Jacob wrestled with the Angel of God. Jacob was alone in the wilderness and no doubt in a quandary as well. He was between two angry adversaries wondering what was to become of him and his entire entourage. Either or both of his adversaries could have slaughtered his wives and children and took his herds and divided them between themselves.  Who knows what might have taken place but for the divine providence and promise of God?

The dialogue suggests he knew with whom he wrestled.  He knew “the man” was able to grant him a “boon,” if you will. When he was unable to master his opponent he demanded a favor (blessing).

While Jacob was God’s chosen vessel for Messiah’s line he was less than an honorable man. The word “jacob” in Hebrew is interpreted supplanter (one who supersedes or replaces by guile). He knew that and traded on God’s promise to him at the stairway (KJV “ladder”) where the Lord met him as he fled from Essau some twenty years before.

Of course we will never know what might have been the blessing from God since he had already promised Jacob; “I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon you lie, to you will I give it, and to your seed;  And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all places whither you go, and will bring you again into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken to you of.  (Genesis 28: 13-15)

Jacob was crippled in the wrestling match. He walked with a limp for the rest of his life.  Jacob wrestled with God about his situation between Essau and Laban. If Jacob had  submitted himself to God and wrestled with his sin “in the presence of” God, instead of wrestling with God about his sin who knows how different the result might have been? The same is true of us today; the God Christians follow today is the same God Jacob wrestled with in the desert.

Having been given the promised blessing of eternal life through Christ, the Christian would do well to “wait upon the Lord.” For “eye has not seen nor ear heard neither has it entered into the heart” what God had prepared for his children. When we choose to  wrestle with God instead of wrestling with sin in the presence of God the result is usually a spiritually crippled for life. Whether or not God is ultimately a loving, gracious and good God is second to the fact that God is God. The greatest temptation of man is that we can be equal to God. The created can never be equal to the creator. To deny this principle one must deny the creator, but denying the creator does not delete, or in any way deprecate that creator’s existence.

It just so happens that God is love, and God is grace. Without the unconditional love of God the Father, there never would have been the Son, who was given to us in exchange for our sin. The Son of God offered the perfect sacrifice for sin, and the Son then tells the Holy Spirit to indwell the Christian not only to teach, guide and direct the Christian, but to fulfill the spiritual desires of the human nature, and through this fulfillment, provide a way to overcome the falsity of selfishness, and through this relationship, a way to overcome sin, Satan and the world.6 The Christian is called to wrestle with his individuality, wherein lies his sin nature, before God in order to be transformed7 because God is the only person who has the ability to remove sin from us. The example of this sinless nature was given to us by the Christ, who’s very existence  comes from God to show us that we can be free from sin and conformed to the image of Christ. Instead, many choose to wrestle with God about the freedom of his individuality wherein he is prone to take pride in the attempt of overcoming his own sin. Unfortunately what we see all too often is that the person who wrestles with God about sin is usually consumed and damaged by that sin.

1 The ancient creeds carry the “seed” of the reason for our creation proclaim we are created to be the direct object of God’s unconditional love, to worship (through prayer offer thanks and praise) and enjoy him for all eternity.

This above all: to thine own self be true…

In case you are not familiar with the plot of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, let me set it out briefly for you.  Hamlet discovers the death of his father was at the hands of his father’s brother and his mother was also guilty before, during and after the fact.  She conspired to kill her husband, allow his brother ascend to the throne in order to marry her brother-in-law.  I said all this to say, among the conspirators was the kings prime minister  (or counselor) Polonius.  His son Laertes was about to embark on an journey to a distant kingdom.  Polonius called him aside to give him some fatherly advice.

In Act I, scene iii of Hamlet, the character of Polonius prepares his son Laertes for travel abroad with a speech in which he directs the youth to commit a “few precepts to memory.” Among these percepts is the now-familiar adage…”neither a borrower nor a lender be, For loan oft loses both itself and friend. And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry…” and the dictum: “This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day; thou cans’t not be false to any man ”

Now let us deal with reality; had Polonius followed his own advice that seemed imperative for him to pass on to his son he could have stopped one of the greatest tragedies the world has ever known wherein he and his son died by the sword as well as halted the assassination of the king of Denmark.  In addition Polonius’ daughter Ophelia, would not have been driven insane and committed suicide and Hamlet himself as well would not have been heinously murdered.

I am always amazed that there are millions who see enactments of Hamlet or read the play who do not know God nor Jesus other than by name who are outraged by the lack of fairness or justice in it all and are filled with self righteousness indignation!  Yet they see no inequity in wanting to do away with God in their every day life and all memory of Him erased from society!  “We were opposed to morality (God) because it interfered with our sexual freedom.”1 — Aldous Huxley.

There is a sermon in this circumstance about situations that play themselves out everyday in the world and have since Adam sinned and Cain murdered Abel.

Just as there was in Adam the ability to say NO to Eve concerning the forbidden fruit;2 there is in every man the capability to kill, commit mayhem, pillage, rape and murder his fellow man who is in the way of his personal pleasure and supposed well fare and well being.

Until there is a true realization of the evil possible in the heart of every human being, particularly within himself, it is doubtful that a man has ever understood the utterly odiousness or wickedness of sin and fully confessed.  The possibility that every man and/or woman has in his/her heart the possibility to commit heinous acts such as Jeffery Dahmer and Charles Manson did it is doubtful that person really understands the depth of the sacrifice God the Father and Jesus Christ made for him.

The Apostle Paul expresses it this way “He who knew no sin was made sin for us!”  “ He took upon himself the sins of us all!”  What more could God have done for his creatures?  The cross was not punishment for Christ’s sins but ours or did he do it in sympathy for us!  Until it is understood “my” sins hung Jesus on the cross and the love of God took them upon Himself it is not understood at all.

1 The Sanhedrin’s excuse for crucifying Christ “they (the Romans) will come and take away our place”
2 Genesis 1: 31; And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.

How to save the world…

Hot news; just off the wire… Hello Mr. and Mrs. North and South America and all the ships at sea… flash!  I just discovered the solution to all the ills of the world!  It is not something that must be manufactured or bought and sold it is HUMAN NATURE.

I want what I want when I want it and any way I want it and no one has the right to try to stop me!

In fact many want what they want so badly that they go crazy and kill and destroy anything standing in their way to get it.

If they don’t realize I need it that bad then they deserve to die any way.  I am doing them a favor to take them out of their misery; don’t they realize that?

Have no fear I have found the answer to that problem and it is free.  It can be had at no cost just for the asking.  Simply remove “human nature” and replace it with a “Divine nature” that is content to live and let live under an omnipotent, omniscient omnipresent, benevolent God.

Remember…

When you come right down to it, getting the world’s problems solved is simple in concept but as always, the devil is in the details.

Did you know…

Did you know now that science has the ability to study genetics it finds that the “gene pool” for many plant and animal species are actually eroding? This means that the concept of Darwinism where biological change increases the amount of diversity of life on the planet is actuality in contrast with the evidences of science. This environment is not gaining genetic information, it is loosing genetic information. We are, in essence de-volving through genetic erosion.

Just thinking…

I watched Bill Maher on Huckabee night before last. He’s another one of those people who says that religion is the cause of all evil in the world. At the root of his argument, of course, is the whole “we’ve outgrown” the need for a god thought. Strangely enough the thought hit me, he’s right. Religion is the cause of all evil in the world. Bill’s problem is he fails to recognize that Atheism is a religion too, and that any religion that seeks to dominate men with use of a false sense of superiority is really a small group of men who seek dominance over all other men.

God doesn’t seek dominance over men, God is dominant over men. God merely calls out to men to show them who He is, and why He bothered to create them. Men like Bill Maher seek dominance over God (or at least what they perceive of as the concept of God). They aren’t interested in acknowledging a creator, they’re too busy trying to create for themselves. Funny thing is, I’ve never seen any of these people create anything of lasting value so much as I’ve seen them seek the destruction of everything of lasting value.

For instance, guys like this have forced the ten commandments out of the public place. I wonder, when did society functionally remove the concept “thou shall not kill” from it’s legal system? The reason for removing the ten commandments is not the ten commandments, but rather the first two of the ten. You see, they’re perfectly willing to throw out the baby with the bath water just so they get the credit for cleaning the tub. Little do they realize, the tub’s empty and the whole purpose of the tub was to hold water, and the baby.

Figure that one out.

A little learning is a dangerous thing…

“A little learning is a dangerous thing.” That “proverb” amplified by an another often misquoted one, “ignorance is bliss,” is a good example.” Most people that quote it are not aware of the entire quote. It goes, “Where ignorance is bliss ‘tis folly to be wise.” A little googling on the internet brings up with a little more information about the quote. It is often attributed to William Shakespeare; but, Thomas Gray is the author. He was born on 26 December 1716 at 41 Cornhill, London, England.
The Wise King Solomon once wrote: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” ( Proverbs 4:7) There appears to be a great deal more quotes on ignorance on the web perhaps than on wisdom.
Ignorance is usually associated with such words as “stupid,” dumb or in some manner descriptive of a mentally deficiency. That most likely comes about because the definition is not known. A lack of interest or laziness is more likely be the primary cause of ignorance not a mental problem. There is a very simple cure for ignorance as well as laziness; for the most part a public library has the prescription for both problems. Time required for applying the remedies is a bother but not a serious impedance.
It would seem there are many who forget the root word ignore and its definition. Calling a person ignorant is usually considered an insult; however, there is a quick cure for ignorance. Submit to avid learning and read extensively.
Ignore is the root of both ignorance and ignorant, it simply means; to refuse to take notice of or acknowledge; or, to disregard intentionally. Pick up a book or an informative periodical and begin reading. In a rather short time no one can call such a person ignorant and be correct in the assessment. The only disparaging quality of the condition is to remain in that state when it is so easy eradicated.
The truth is ignorance is a sadly mistaken concept of bliss it may lead to destruction. It has been said, “No one ever became, or can become truly eloquent without being a reader of the Bible, and an admirer of the purity and sublimity of its language.” “I wish there was an instruction book about mankind,” is often asked by someone. There is, it is called the Holy Bible.  It is truth come directly from God.
The Bible contains all the wisdom of the ages in one book. It is in effect a collection of sixty six books with fifty five authors in one volume. The golden thread that weaves its way throughout is God reaching down to lift up mankind to Him. No one can be considered ignorant or uneducated who becomes familiar with that book. And the last state of that man is better than the first.
