The next time someone says…
… there is no such thing as absolute truth, ask them; “Are you absolutely sure about that?”
There is expectation and there is reality; often they are the same as the law of parallel lines, “never the twain shall meet.” Therefore that situation is a foundation for discontentment. The reason at the bottom of depression is that this condition exists and there is little or nothing to be done about it. Therefore it would behoove one always to keep a good grip on reality and avoid false expectations.
Here is where truth and righteousness enter into the equation. A weak ruler in a strong governmental environment once asked, “what is truth?” Another question that often accompanies that one is asked by devious individuals, “is there such a thing as absolute truth?”
The reason for that question is because devious people do devious things. It is a way of life with them. It is their intent to create a situation that relieves them of immanent responsibility. These people walk into a situation with the intent to back out without consequence in order to avoid certain strident situations. In reality they do not intend to be held accountable if an unprofitable situation, either economical or political, presents itself.
There is absolute truth! There is a book wherein it is recorded! In it “holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the” [Spirit of God]1. Why is there so much opposition to this declaration? If they admit there is a book of truth it requires decisions mankind finds too binding. They have no answer when asked; “if it is true then why do you not believe it and do as it requires you?”
In a society without absolutes there is chaos and weak men with an agenda conspire to wrest power and subjugate other weaker men to exploit them. Weak men desire to sustain the power they have usurped and need a double standard2 to work deception. They hate and despise truth. Reasons are found to deny truth to avoid making decisions unfavorable to their agenda.
The book of truth is the Holy Bible. God says I am the way, the truth and the life. He can not be God and lie. In reality it is a library containing sixty six books wherein fifty writers cooperated but there are no contradictions. The only contradictions are between the ears of its critics. The same theme is present throughout and is coherent throughout. It is possible to study that book for a dozen life times and each time learn more. As a matter of fact it is the only book that can make that claim.
The end of the matter then is this: when expectation is based in THE BOOK of books reality is obvious and expectation never goes wanting when based in it wisdom. Depression is a normal state of affairs with finite minds; they reach situations that they can not answer quickly. They need help. Concentrate in its truth and wisdom; talk with the Author of that BOOK (it is called prayer) and avoid most depression. “Come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest….for I am meek and lowly in heart and you shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matthew 11: 28-30)
