The New Covenant

by Isaiah Roman

It appears from talking to many of those that profess a belief that Jesus is the Son of God and the only mediator between God and man to bring salvation to those that believe; particularly in the United States, there are those that labor under a misconception of the covenant they have with God.   While Christians are admonished to pray for the nation and it leaders in which they live (for as the nation prospers so do they) there is no covenant between God and those nations whatsoever.  It just doesn’t exist i.e. there is no evidence of such recorded in scripture.

Everyone that believes that Jesus is Christ and by grace through faith trusts and follows Him as set out in the example of the “Sermon on the Mount;

” God honors those individuals that keep His word and glorify Him. The new covenant (testament), [“For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.   For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth” (Hebrews 9:16-17)]; is a covenant from God to individuals.

God has made no covenant with any nation in history except Israel which is a continuation of the covenants He made with Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and David.  Christians are born again individually one at a time not inducted en masse.

The new covenant was made by God through divine decree: “Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.  I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.  Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession” (Psalm 2: 6-8).

The men that founded this nation gave glory to God in its founding document, the Constitution of the United States of America.  Those leaders depended on God by faith for their welfare and well being.  They believed whole heartedly in the course they set out on they wrote, “we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”  This is evidenced in all the letters and documents circulated during the revolutionary period and after during the early days of the nation. God was given all the glory for it founding and for that He blessed this nation as He has no other since the nation of Israel.  Would God those that profess themselves to be leaders of this nation  today would learn what honor, honesty and integrity mean.

There is now an administration that has initiated genuine, visible, “change;” professing that “the people of this nation demand it” therefore excusing itself it has turned its back on the God responsible for the founding of this nation.  It serves and worships another god, one that is human (Secular Humanism).  Just as Israel and Judah soon after turned its back on the God that delivered them out of slavery in the land of Egypt  so this administration has turned its back on the God that has blessed and preserved this nation until the present time.

It is one thing to be devoted to God either  in error or in truth; it is quite another to presume one is a god or use “the people” as an excuse to blame God for one’s own disobedience  and through it personal gain or glory.  That is blasphemy and the epitome of arrogance.

  1. Matthew chapters 5, 6, & 7
  2. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures “(I Corinthians 15:3).
  3. “He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18).  “He that believes on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).
  4. “And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, which brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians” (Exodus 6:7). “And the Lord said unto me, Arise, take thy journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I swore unto their fathers to give unto them” (Deuteronomy 10:11).
  5. It is God that is sovereign over the affairs of men and nations; He raises up kings and rulers and casts them down. (Psalm 2: 1-5)  They are responsible to Him for their actions, they rule in His stead.  Those that disobey He will require it of them.
  6. Man is the highest form of existence; there is no other being higher to appeal to for aid or assistance.
  7. “And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction” (Jeremiah 32:33).
  8. “We hold these truths to be self evident  that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”  For without life nothing else matters, unless there is liberty mankind can not reach its full potential and without the ability to pursue happiness how can man enjoy the fruits of his labor and bestow them on his posterity?
  9. see I Samuel 15: 3-23 for the entire story; especially verses 15 and 21, Saul blamed the people for his disobedience.
