The God that I Choose

by Isaiah Roman

In the world today there is a wide range of thought concerning deity and morality. Most people recognize the concept of being “spiritual” though I’d be willing to be that few people would be able to define what spiritual means. In actuality the term has no real meaning at all.

Are we to infer that because someone recognizes that they have a spirit that they’ve made some great and wondrous discovery? No.

What we’re supposed to recognize is that the person has understood that they have a spirit and are, in their own way, seeking out the meaning and purpose for life, the universe and everything. It reminds me of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The answer is 42, now what’s the question?

It really is that ridiculous. People who are seeking on their own to fulfill their own concept of deity, or spirituality, or enlightenment are finding answers with no meaning. It’s as though we’ve forgotten to ask the questions, we are merely presented with answers. While this may be light on the conscience, it certainly isn’t heavy on the soul.

People love to seek the thing they want to seek. Comfort is found in the midst of a pile of warm laundry. The problem is, that’s not the purpose of the pile, nor the laundry. Regardless, people are happy to transform the pile into that particular purpose because it “feels” good. It suits their immediate purpose and actually folding putting away the clothes is a chore. In fact, to overcome the personal desire to do nothing more than sit and wrap ourselves inside the warm, soft bed of fresh cloth we must be driven by an exterior force towards the real goal; clothing to wear against the elements outside.

This is how many people live their lives today. Most people suffer from the lack of real clothing to protect them from the elements that assail them. Their drawers are empty, the laundry unfolded, sitting in a pile still, waiting to be used. When accosted by the trials and tribulations this world inevitably brings they find themselves unable to deal with the reality of it all, the harsh and terrible truth that life is not soft and sweet smelling.

When faced with reality, remember that there is an exterior force who has introduced Himself into our lives, who has taught us what to do and how to do it. There is a singular mind which has presented the question to each and every one of us; “who do you say that I am?”

You see, when we realize that God is a single person, with a single will, and a single mind, we must realize that we don’t get to choose what that personality, will and mind are, nor how they operate. Saying that each person gets to choose their own individual God is saying that God doesn’t really exist as a person. If, however, God does exist as a person, not only can none of us choose who and what He is, but none of us can escape what He wants.

Remember that the next time someone says “oh he’s a spiritual person.” It simply means that the poor man is lost and without a clue. As for me, I’m glad that I have been found by a God who actively seeks me.
