Kingdom, Power and Glory

by Isaiah Roman

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. – Matthew 6:9-14

The nature of the Trinity is revealed in the Lord’s Prayer. The Father is the glory. The Son is the Kingdom1. The Spirit is the Power2.

All worship is due to the glory of the Father3. Even the Son gives deference to this fact4. The Kingdom of God is ushered in by the Son. By Him all things were made and through Him all things have come to be5. The Spirit is that person who is the Power of God through both realms. He is the conduit through which our prayers6 are carried to God. He is the power of the miracle of the virgin birth7. He is the presence of the Shekinah Glory in the temple8.

It is through the Trinity that we receive the promises of God. Those promises are kept based upon the holy nature of the Father, to the glory of the Kingdom, through the Power of His will. These promises are; daily sustenance, forgiveness of “debts,” delivery from temptation. There are no promises beyond these. We are not told that we will be protected from harm, healed from illness, given the power of miracles, or shown visions of prophecy. Each of these may, or may not happen, dependent upon God’s providence.

The way that these promises are carried out is contingent upon the very nature of God. The Father sends the Son, who is the “first of creation9” to be the “key of David, he who is opening and no one doth shut, and he shutteth and no one doth open.10” The Son sends the Comforter11, the Spirit, who writes these words on our hearts12, who “doth testify with our spirit, that we are children of God13”, who carries our prayers to heaven and “doth make intercession for us with groanings unutterable14” and who “doth intercede for saints.15

Each of the three persons of God are of one being. Each of the three persons of God have distinct purpose, to one effect. Each of the three persons of God are co-equal and co-eternal. They are not one being and one person. They are not three persons in one person. They are three personal instances of one self-existent, self-sentient, uncaused being; each with a distinct purpose in the order, justice and love that is the nature, character and intent of the great I AM.

This is the essence of the being who has condescended to love us in all things. Should we not give back the small portion that we are able to Him who has and does provide so much for us?

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:25-34

  3. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. – John 4:23 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. – John 1:14 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. – Romans 6:4

  8. The word shekinah does not appear in the Bible, but the concept clearly does. The Jewish rabbis coined this extra-biblical expression, a form of a Hebrew word that literally means “he caused to dwell,” signifying that it was a divine visitation of the presence or dwelling of JEHOVAH God on this earth.

  15. and He who is searching the hearts hath known what is the mind of the Spirit, because according to God he doth intercede for saints. – Romans 8:27
