Just Thinking…
From the earliest records of humanity we can see that, as a race, we have always accepted the concept of the existence of some form of “higher power.” That is, until very recently in history. For sure there have been those who deny the existence of God, and certainly there have been battles over which God is “the” God, but lately a very vocal minority of men have managed to capture a large audience with the message “grow up, there is no God!” I am referring to the latest atheist movement, spearheaded by authors Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins.
The message is, of course, that we’ve evolved past the need for a God. Somehow mankind now knows that it has reached the point in it’s evolutionary trail where God is no longer needed. We’re smart enough, and well advanced enough to know. How we arrived at this sudden epiphany is beyond me. Science and modern man still can’t figure out exactly how the Egyptians built the pyramids to such detailed specifications, but we certainly know that we’re far more advanced than they were with their silly and vain deity worship.
Although this generation of atheists aren’t the first atheists in history, and certainly they won’t be the last, it’s interesting that these two are not merely atheists, but rather anti-theists. According to Hitchens specifically, religion is to blame for all of man’s ills. This is, of course, nothing but a regurgitation in modern form of the arguments of the early humanist philosophers. In this new incarnation every atrocity known to mankind is placed at the feet of religion, despite of the fact that there are and have been billions upon billions of religious people who have done great things in the name of religion. Perhaps Mother Theresa was secretly a mastermind criminal seeking the ultimate destruction of mankind? It’s surprising that they pause only to blame catastrophic weather on mankind, but really, what would be the point of blaming this on God?
It’s actually here that we find the truth behind the claim. Regardless of the personal reason behind the dogma, the truth is that they don’t want God. In it’s place they exalt man as the little engine that could. We and only we have us and only us to look towards for help and guidance. Except, in all reality we and only we have those who are the most intelligent among us to look towards for help and guidance. It is the cult of science. Darwin is the patron saint, humanism is the philosophy, and evolution the dogma.
I find it interesting that when theists assert that the cause of the universe is God, atheists proclaim the “God of the Gaps,” but when asked where the universe came from scientists will say “I don’t know, but I’m sure science will provide the answer.” It’s the same argument! Yet, somehow atheists get a pass because they’re being honest? Whatever you may think about atheism, there is one certain truth: Atheism is nothing more than an another alternative to God. Some atheists are extremist in their militancy, others are pacifist, but atheism really is just another minor, empty religion.
Think about it for a moment, what answers does atheism offer, beyond your life has no meaning other than what meaning you give it, your death means nothing beyond what others feel about you when you’re gone, and as long as you don’t get caught, there really is no real consequence for anything you do.
And you wonder why AIG, ENRON, FannieMae and FreddieMac fell apart? Oh, wait, were these guys “religious” too? Maybe we can blame the economy on religion as well…
