Who Answers the Hard Questions

I was recently informed that Anne Rice has claimed to have turned her life around and dedicated herself to Jesus. First let me say that this should tell you how much attention I pay to popular culture. Second, let me say that the source of this information was a self-avowed atheist who was quick to point out that he was sure that her conversion announcement was nothing more than a publicity stunt for her latest series of books. The first question I asked him was whether or not Ms. Rice had repented of the income from her previous works. His immediate answer was as expected; no, she has not. In fact his exact words were “I guess she repented of the wages of sin, except for those wages.”

Progress or Retrogress?

progressMankind is innately and consummately religious. Those who are not taught religion begin at a very early age to develop their own. Those who are taught a religion reach a point in life where that religion taught to them does not fit their personal preferences, or lifestyle. Rather than conform to the religion they modify it to conform to their individual desire.

The Creation Covenant is Breaking

Over the last few months there has been a topic of thought dominant in my mind that was a mystery until just today. Over the next few weeks I will continue to refine the thoughts in my head on this subject as I compare them to what I know about scripture. As these thoughts become more lucid, I will write more on this topic.

There is a difference between the traditions of the church, and the meaning of the church. Layers and layers of practice have been built up in all areas of the exercising of the mandates set out in scripture; baptism, evangelism, exhortation, ministry. Years, decades, centuries have been spent arguing over the minutiae of the proper means of baptism. This, among many other issues, has caused rifts within the body of believers.

Many words are thrown about without an understanding of their meaning and purpose. It is language that binds us, but it is language that divides us. The words that are in my head and which get expressed upon these pages may very well have different definitions in the eyes of the reader. This is why such great care is taken to each word used. This is why such detail is attended to with footnotes and references.

In 1997 a television series spawned off of a major motion picture. The series “Stargate SG-1” is still rerunning successfully today on the Sci-Fi channel. Along comes our hero, Dr. Daniel Jackson, a crack Egyptologist and hieroglyphics expert. Dr. Jackson is recruited by the government to examine the object in an attempt to discern it’s true purpose. Of course, as the story goes on, he does crack the mystery which initiates a grand adventure to other planets through the use of this great metal ring which has been termed the “Stargate.”

More Popular Than Ever

One of the most popular “religions” is Buddhism. The primary reason for it’s modern surge in popularity is it’s ability to provide absolution from guilt without the need for adherence to any particular structure of reconciliation. All you have to do is rack up more “good” deeds than “bad” deeds and you’ve got your shot at Nirvana. The problem(or the advantage depending on how you look at it) with this is that neither good nor bad are defined. Good is what’s advantageous to you, without being harmful to others. Bad is what’s bad for you and is harmful to others.
