Idols

by Isaiah Roman

I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  You shall have no other gods before me (Exodus 20: 2-3).

You shalt not [fabricate or fashion] [carve or sculpt]1 an image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:2 you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord your God am a jealous God,3 visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” (Exodus 20:5).

An idol, according to scripture, is anything tangible or intangible that is substituted in the mind for God, any creature living or dead in which a human being honored instead of God for things He has done for the creature.

In many pagan pantheons of worship large or fierce animals, storms, mountains (particularly volcanos), long lived plants or trees (Ex. Oaks, Redwood etc.) etc. are worshipped as gods. In native American totems are carved with bodies and heads of animals are carved and are objects of devotion along with the “Great Spirit” or “Grand Father” Wakan Tanka of the Sioux tribes and Aba Inki of the eastern tribes. There are different “spirits” among the various tribes in different part of the continent. The wolf seems to be the strongest totem of the plains indians or the bear in northeastern or northwestern America.

Isn’t it strange that evolutionists, atheists, agnostics and other anti-god enthusiasts see no commonality between the “Great Ziggurat” near Babylon the Egyptian pyramids, the earthen mounds of North America and the pyramids in Central and South America? When one begins with a preconceived theory rather than empirical evidence strange things are obviously inevitable.

The idea of man as the ultimate being is not necessarily a novel form of worship. the “Titans” of Greek mythology, or Giants in other pagan religions can be traced back to famous or powerful men of ancient times. It is only in recent years that certain groups of collectivists have taken a tangent from Hindu paganism and evolution to form a theory that just as all things evolve from a lower to higher degree humankind is evolving to good-hood and eventually godhead or a supreme human god.

It will be interesting to observe why the human gods are only mortal in the final analysis. All of them die and never return. Eternal life is one fact of human life that will be very difficult to deal with eventually. I doubt this will deter those that prefer evolutionary thought from creating a fable to match the ones they have created to replace the sedimentary layer theory that has been found inadequate. Of course it is always possible to ignore the past when it is embarrassing or impossible to explain.

This is also interpreted to mean form a concept of thought in the mind to take the place of God. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

  1. The nature of mankind is to create an image in his mind of something concrete the finite mind can cling to that reminds him of the unseen God. That vision he creates over time becomes and replaces, the invisible God. For this reason God imputes to the Christian, in the process of regeneration, His Holy Spirit to dwell, live, in the subconscious mind as a guide to righteousness and purity of life.
  2. This means birds, mankind, fish or any living creature on land, under the sea or in the skies above. Particularly any statue of a man or woman either carved out of wood or sculpted from stone
  3. Jealousy – fiercely protective or vigilant of one’s rights or possessions. God alone is worthy of protecting his worthiness it is without peer or higher esteem.
